How to PrEP

PrEP is a pill that is taken orally. There are two methods for taking PrEP to prevent HIV.

Daily PrEP

Content for Daily PrEP goes here.

On-demand (2-1-1)

PrEP on-demand is less commonly prescribed because it requires careful planning and tracking of sexual activity - and we know sex isn't always planned.

PrEP on-demand does not require daily intake. This is ideal for someone who can't access a sufficient supply of PrEP due to cost or if they have predictable and fluctuating sexual behavior.

What is PrEP?
PrEP, short for Pre-exposure Prophylaxis, is a once-daily pill for people who are HIV-negative. It helps prevent HIV by providing a protective barrier against the virus if you are exposed. Currently, FDA-approved options include Truvada® and Descovy®, both highly effective when taken daily as prescribed. Studies show PrEP reduces the risk of contracting HIV by up to 99%.
Who is eligible for PrEP?
PrEP is recommended for individuals at risk of HIV, including those with HIV-positive partners, multiple sexual partners, or who engage in injection drug use.
How effective is PrEP?
When taken daily, PrEP is up to 99% effective at preventing HIV. Consistent daily use is the most thoroughly studied and recommended regimen to ensure maximum protection.
How does PrEP work?
PrEP works by blocking an enzyme called HIV reverse transcriptase, which the virus needs to replicate in your body. This stops HIV from establishing an infection if you’re exposed. By maintaining consistent levels of the medication in your bloodstream, PrEP offers a powerful defense against HIV.
What are the side effects of PrEP?
Most people experience little to no side effects when starting PrEP. For those who do, common short-term side effects include nausea, headaches, and mild abdominal discomfort. These usually resolve within the first month of use. Rarely, long-term use can affect bone density or kidney function, but these effects are reversible once PrEP is discontinued. Regular monitoring ensures that your health is always prioritized while on PrEP.
What if I miss a dose of PrEP?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your usual schedule. Do not double up doses, as this may cause side effects like nausea. Missing one dose won’t significantly reduce your protection, but consistent daily use is key for maximum effectiveness. If you’re struggling to take your pill regularly, let us know—we’re here to help.
Does PrEP prevent other STDs?
No, PrEP only protects against HIV. It does not prevent other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like gonorrhea or chlamydia. Regular STI testing and using barrier methods, such as condoms, are important for complete sexual health protection.
How do I know if I am at risk of contracting HIV?
You may be at increased risk for HIV if:

  • Sexually active transgender persons without HIV
  • Persons without HIV who inject drugs
  • Persons who have been prescribed non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and report continued risk behavior, or who have used multiple courses of PEP
  • Sexually active adults and adolescents who have had anal or vaginal sex in the past 6 months; and HIV-positive sexual partner (especially if partner has unknown or detectable viral load); or Recent bacterial STI; or History of inconsistent or no condom use with sexual partner(s)

PrEP can be a valuable tool for anyone at risk, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. Speak with a healthcare provider to assess your risk and determine if PrEP is right for you.
What are my options for PrEP?
PrEP is available in two FDA-approved options: Truvada® (generic options are also available) and Descovy®. Both are equally effective when taken daily. Your healthcare provider will discuss your medical history and preferences to recommend the best choice for you.
