PrEP

What is PrEP?
PrEP, short for Pre-exposure Prophylaxis, is a once-daily pill for people who are HIV-negative. It helps prevent HIV by providing a protective barrier against the virus if you are exposed. Currently, FDA-approved options include Truvada® and Descovy®, both highly effective when taken daily as prescribed. Studies show PrEP reduces the risk of contracting HIV by up to 99%.
Who is eligible for PrEP?
PrEP is recommended for individuals at risk of HIV, including those with HIV-positive partners, multiple sexual partners, or who engage in injection drug use.
How effective is PrEP?
When taken daily, PrEP is up to 99% effective at preventing HIV. Consistent daily use is the most thoroughly studied and recommended regimen to ensure maximum protection.
How does PrEP work?
PrEP works by blocking an enzyme called HIV reverse transcriptase, which the virus needs to replicate in your body. This stops HIV from establishing an infection if you’re exposed. By maintaining consistent levels of the medication in your bloodstream, PrEP offers a powerful defense against HIV.
What are the side effects of PrEP?
Most people experience little to no side effects when starting PrEP. For those who do, common short-term side effects include nausea, headaches, and mild abdominal discomfort. These usually resolve within the first month of use. Rarely, long-term use can affect bone density or kidney function, but these effects are reversible once PrEP is discontinued. Regular monitoring ensures that your health is always prioritized while on PrEP.
What if I miss a dose of PrEP?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your usual schedule. Do not double up doses, as this may cause side effects like nausea. Missing one dose won’t significantly reduce your protection, but consistent daily use is key for maximum effectiveness. If you’re struggling to take your pill regularly, let us know—we’re here to help.
Does PrEP prevent other STDs?
No, PrEP only protects against HIV. It does not prevent other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like gonorrhea or chlamydia. Regular STI testing and using barrier methods, such as condoms, are important for complete sexual health protection.
How do I know if I am at risk of contracting HIV?
You may be at increased risk for HIV if:

  • Sexually active transgender persons without HIV
  • Persons without HIV who inject drugs
  • Persons who have been prescribed non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and report continued risk behavior, or who have used multiple courses of PEP
  • Sexually active adults and adolescents who have had anal or vaginal sex in the past 6 months; and HIV-positive sexual partner (especially if partner has unknown or detectable viral load); or Recent bacterial STI; or History of inconsistent or no condom use with sexual partner(s)

PrEP can be a valuable tool for anyone at risk, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. Speak with a healthcare provider to assess your risk and determine if PrEP is right for you.
What are my options for PrEP?
PrEP is available in two FDA-approved options: Truvada® (generic options are also available) and Descovy®. Both are equally effective when taken daily. Your healthcare provider will discuss your medical history and preferences to recommend the best choice for you.

Pharmacy

Can I use any pharmacy?
Yes, but we recommend using one of our partner pharmacies to ensure a seamless and cost-effective experience. Partner pharmacies allow us to provide our services for free while managing all required paperwork to minimize your out-of-pocket costs. They also offer free shipping and have expertise in PrEP to help you navigate insurance coverage. If you prefer another pharmacy, we can transfer your prescription, but you’ll need to handle associated costs and paperwork independently.
How will my PrEP be packaged when shipped to me?
Your PrEP will be shipped in discreet packaging, with no branding or indication of its contents. It will arrive via free 1–2 day shipping through Priority Mail®, FedEx, UPS, or a local courier, ensuring fast and private delivery.
Can I transfer my prescription if I already have one?
We don’t accept outside prescriptions, but you can easily sign up for a new PrEP prescription through our platform. It’s quick, hassle-free, and entirely remote, so you can start fresh without leaving your home.
How do I renew my PrEP prescription?
When your current supply is running low, we’ll send you a quick health assessment questionnaire to complete. After reviewing your responses, we’ll ship you another at-home lab kit. Once your labs are processed, your next prescription will be sent out, ensuring uninterrupted care.
What happens if my prescription is delayed?
If your prescription is delayed, we’ll notify you immediately and work with you to ensure a prompt delivery. Contact our support team for any concerns.

Labs

What labs are required for PrEP?
Common lab tests include HIV, kidney function, and Hepatitis B screenings. Additional tests may be required based on your health profile.
How do the at-home labs work?
Our at-home lab kits make testing simple and convenient. Once you complete your online health questionnaire, we’ll ship the kit directly to your door. Inside, you’ll find everything you need, including step-by-step instructions. Collect your samples, place them in the prepaid return envelope, and drop them in the mail. Your results will be ready in just a few days!
Is at-home testing my only option?
No, you can also opt for in-person testing if you prefer. While at-home lab kits offer convenience and quick results from the comfort of your home, we can help you schedule an appointment at one of over 2,200 lab locations across the U.S. In-person visits typically take 15 minutes or less, and our team will guide you through the process.
Can I get my PrEP lab tests done in-person at a lab near me?
Yes, you’re welcome to complete your labs at a local lab, such as LabCorp or Quest Diagnostics. Let us know during your registration process or message us after submitting your PrEP request. Pricing for in-person testing depends on your insurance coverage, so we recommend confirming in-network labs with your insurance provider beforehand.
Why are labs required?
Lab tests ensure PrEP is safe and effective for you. They help monitor key health markers, including your HIV status, kidney function, and overall sexual health. Regular testing every three months also screens for STIs, giving you peace of mind and keeping you and your partner(s) healthy.
What lab work do I need to do in order to get PrEP?
Before starting PrEP, you’ll need to complete a series of lab tests, including:

  • HIV screening
  • Kidney function tests (creatinine levels)
  • Hepatitis B and C tests
  • STI screening (e.g., gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis—optional but highly recommended)
  • Pregnancy test (if applicable)

Once you’re on PrEP, labs are required every three months to ensure your continued safety and health.
What if I test positive for HIV or an STI?
If you test positive for HIV or a sexually transmitted infection, our care team will contact you with next steps. This includes personalized treatment options, referrals to specialized providers, and access to free or low-cost resources for additional care. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
